Brief introduction of norm ASTM A 269

Brief introduction of specification of stainless steel seamless pipes, part 1: ASTM A 269

Seamless stainless steel tubes and pipes are usually produced according to some specified standards / norms. There are many differently standards in differently countries and for differently applications. ASTM A 269 is one of the most popular standard for producing stainless steel seamless pipes.

The complete name of A 269 is "Standard specification for seamless and welded austenitic stainless steel tubing for general service". From the name we can see that tubing produced under A 269 is for general service. So stainless steel tubing according to A 269 is widely used in many fields and for many applications. For example, most of the stainless steel hydraulic tubing is produced under ASTM A 269.

There are 15 sections in A 269, as a buyer or a sales man to quick understand this standard we just need to catch the most important sections as below:

Section 1. Scope:

Here the application scope of the standard is defined.

Section 4. General requirements:

We know that the general requirements are followed in ASTM A 1016. That means if we do not find the needed specification information from A 269, then we should refer to ASTM A1016.

Section 6. Heat treatment:

This section defines the process and parameters of heat treatment of the tubing. Such as the temperature and cooling method. Different materials require different heat treatment process, temperature and so on.

 Section 7. Chemical Composition:

This is the most import part of the standard, actually it is also the section people most frequently looked for. People can look for the chemical composition of a specific steel grade such as TP 304, TP 316 and so on in Table 1.

Section 9. Mechanical Test Required:

This section defined the requirements of flaring test and hardness test.

Table 2 and Table 3:

Table 2 is the number of  Tubes in a Lot Heat Treated by the Continuous Process or by Direct Quench After Hot Forming, and people can find the permissible tolerance of the dimensions (including outside diameter and wall thickness, length). This table is very important and also is the most frequently used.

Section 10. NDT test or Hydrostatic test

Each tube should be test under non destructive electric test or the hydrostatic test.

Section 11. Hardness requirements

We can find the requirements of the hardness of the tubing of different steel grades.

Section 12. Permissible Variations in Dimensions

We can look for the dimension tolerance in Table 3, just as I said on above.

The above is the most important section of A 269, but I do not mean other information is not important, actually all information in the standard is important. But as a buyer or sales man of stainless steel seamless tubes, we can catch this standard through the above important sections. We can find most of the information in those sections.
